It’s the busiest time of the year for Nacogdoches ISD’s Plant Services department.

Students may be home for the summer, but that leaves ample opportunities for completion of needed maintenance and repair work throughout the school district.

Of particular importance this time of year is NISD staff that service heating and air conditioning units. Under the direction of Keith Hayter, plant service workers are performing preventive maintenance on heating and cooling units throughout the district.

This vital work ensures extended life for aging equipment. Two district HVAC workers are tending to the repairs, and Plant Services Director Ralph LaRue continues to look for more help.

Leo Berry, who works within the HVAC department, is servicing all kitchen equipment in the district this summer, performing further preventative maintenance within the Student Nutrition operation that serves roughly 1.5 million meals during the course of the year.

The district’s custodial service, headed up by Mike Davis, will clean each room at every campus within NISD. More than 400 rooms will have all furniture removed and floors stripped and waxed (or carpets cleaned). These crews work two daily shifts through the week and on some weekends.

And even though it’s a student holiday, Davis’ staff will still have to take into consideration summer school schedules as well as the teachers and campus administrators that work the entire year.

A three-person crew in the NISD warehouse will process new textbooks, dividing a tractor-trailer load of texts into school-size orders and delivering them to campuses. They will also conduct an annual inventory under the direction of Robert Vaughn.
Maintenance and grounds teams under the direction of Mike Haley will be busy with general repairs to buildings along with preventative maintenance jobs.

The district’s locksmith will check out doors throughout NISD; the plumber will pressure-test many of the gas lines in buildings; the electrician will replace breakers, switches and lights, as needed (there are more than 13,000 light fixtures within NISD); the painter will apply new coats of paint; and NISD’s carpenter will oversee larger projects and general repairs.

A grounds crew of Tim Dyess, Jeremy Thomas and James Carter (along with Cameron Powers, who is assigned solely to McMichael Middle School), will keep lawns trimmed and sidewalks and driveways edged throughout the 300 acres that make up NISD.
The grounds crew also doubles as NISD’s moving team and will be on hand when a principal needs rooms rearranged.

Eleven summer construction jobs are contracted to outside services (at a total of $1.46 million) and are under the supervision of Plant Services Director Ralph LaRue.

Projects being tended to this summer include: The ninth-grade roof at Nacogdoches High School, capital forestry assessment, restroom renovation at Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language, heating and air conditioning work at Mike Moses Middle School and Fredonia Elementary, refinish of all gym floors in the district, replacement of doors at Davis Gym adjacent to Thomas J. Rusk Elementary, replacement of the net at the NHS softball field, upgrade on NHS computerized door locks and replacement of a roll-down gate that separates the cafeteria from seating area at McMichael Middle School.
