Project SOS – or, Supply Our Schools – has kicked off its 2018 drive to benefit students across Nacogdoches County culminating with the annual “Fill the Bus” campaign on Friday, Aug. 3, at Walmart in Nacogdoches.

The campaign serves students from Nacogdoches County. It’s the 26th year for Project SOS, which began under the leadership of Ella Ruth McCullough, Mary Grimes, Dot Martin and Karen Swenson. The group is seeking donations to benefit needy children in the county. The goal is to provide basic school supplies to every needy child in Nacogdoches County.

“Donations go to purchase supplies in bulk to maximize funds,” said co-chair Gini Blackwell. “We definitely need donations. Actual supplies are also welcomed and distributed all across the county.”

Project SOS is supported by Community Action, Nacogdoches County schools, KSWP/KAVX Christian Radio and the Nacogdoches Junior Forum. One hundred percent of monetary donations go toward the purchase of supplies.

“The support of individuals and businesses is very important,” Swenson said. “We truly appreciate those who make donations, regardless of amount. Some students need everything and others just need a few supplies.

“The local community is very supportive of our efforts since it benefits students in Etoile, Woden, Chireno, Martinsville, Garrison, Cushing, Central Heights and Nacogdoches.”

Some of those students are being asked to volunteer Friday, Aug. 3, for the “Fill the Bus” at the Nacogdoches Walmart.

Donations can be mailed or dropped by at Community Action located at 114 W. Hospital.
