Humphrey, a pet hamster, has some big adjustments to make in his life after returning to school following a holiday break. Og, a frog, has taken up residence in the classroom where Humphrey lives and now the students are paying more attention to newcomer.
Third-graders in Nacogdoches ISD, along with fellow students around Texas, will begin reading “Friendship According to Humphrey” by author Betty G. Birney April 15 as part of Texas Reads One Book.
Through an exclusive video cast featuring guest reader Jason Garrett, coach of the Dallas Cowboys, students will read the first chapter of the book in class. Guest readers from the Nacogdoches community will then pick up from there and read the second chapter to the students.
Texas Reads One Book is part of Read to Them, a Virginia-based non-profit agency that promotes a culture of literacy for every home. Texas Reads One Book is an opportunity for young readers to begin expanding their interest in chapter books like “Friendship According to Humphrey.”
As part of the Texas Reads One Book program, third-graders in Nacogdoches ISD will receive their own copy of “Friendship According to Humphrey.”
“This is the perfect time for students in third-grade to begin discovering chapter books, if they haven’t already,” said Nacogdoches ISD literacy specialist Jennifer Simmons. “We encourage families to read this book together with their young student.
“We want this to be the start of a long love affair these students have with reading.”
