Nacogdoches High School

Summer Reading

2010

At Nacogdoches High School, the teachers and administrators feel strongly that students are best prepared for their coursework in all academic disciplines by reading varied works of literature, and that students who are readers during the summer have an easier transition to the academic challenges they will meet upon starting school.  Keeping this in mind, English teachers at Nacogdoches High School have designed summer reading programs for their courses that are both engaging and academically stimulating.  The selections for each class will become the basis of instruction for the first instructional unit of the school year.

All students enrolled in English I Pre-AP, English II Pre-AP, English III AP, English IV AP, and Dual Credit 131 are required to read two books during the summer and complete assignments on those books before the start of school in August, 2010.

Any student who does not complete the summer reading and/or the associated assignments will have a modest amount of time at the start of school to complete the assignments, per the teacher's discretion.  All students should understand that while their enrollment in advanced English classes is not dependent upon completion of the summer reading assignments, they can expect to be behind the other students at the start of the year, and it is reasonable to expect that their grades may be affected.

All students at Nacogdoches High School who are interested in taking advanced classes for the 2010-2011 school year will have been given notification of the summer reading assignments for their grade level before the end of the 2009-2010 school year.  Any student who enrolls at Nacogdoches High School during the summer should be given the assignment by his or her guidance counselor and should make every effort to contact the teacher regarding completing the assignment.  All teacher contact information is listed on individual assignments.
