Empowering Parents program starts up for new year

Empowering Parents classes will start later this month with a three-part workshop series led by Nacogdoches ISD social worker Catie Munguia. The classes will be held virtually over Zoom, a video conferencing app.

The classes will take place from noon to 1 p.m. and will be held Oct. 27, Nov. 12 and Dec. 1. An in-person workshop to cover all three sections is planned for 5:30-7:30 p.m., Dec. 8, at a location to be determined.

Part 1 of Empowering Parents will cover Communication. During the workshop, ways to improve communication with children will be discussed.

Part 2 will cover Behavior where participants will explore challenging behavior from children… what it means, where it comes from and how parents can respond in a way that promotes learning while strengthening the relationship with the child.

Part 3 goes over Youth Mental Health and will look at some of the most common mental health challenges faced by children and youth, as well as ways that adults in children’s lives can support them as well as how and when to seek help.

Support for Parents of Hyperactive Children

Additionally, NISD Student Support Services will offer a monthly support group for parents of hyperactive children. Through this professionally-facilitated group, along with the support from other parents facing similar challenges, parents can expect to reduce their stress levels while learning strategies to help improve their child’s behavior and academic achievement.

The first course is at noon, Thursday, Oct. 22, via a Zoom video conference. Other classes will be held Nov. 5 and Dec. 3.
