Finnerud named All-State Musician

Nacogdoches High School sophomore trumpet player Aidan Finnerud has been named an All-State Musician by the Texas Music Educators Association after going through a competitive process that began last fall and included district, region and area levels.

All-State is the highest honor a Texas music student can receive. More than 50,000 music students from around the state entered the audition process and 1,860 were selected for 2021.

Aidan, who’s a member of the Golden Dragon Marching Band under the direction of Jacob Weems, was also named first chair in the Region 21 Jazz Band earlier this year. He is also a member of the East Texas Trumpet studio where he studies with Max Mucino.

“This is a remarkable achievement for Aidan,” Weems said. “We’re extremely proud of what he’s done, and this is more evidence of the talented band students we have at Nacogdoches High School.”

Aidan picked up the trumpet when he entered middle school in sixth-grade. He also plays the piano and guitar but says the trumpet is his favorite.

Aidan has two more years left in high school, but the music won’t end there. He’s interested in pursuing the trumpet into college with a major in music, Aidan said.

The Dragon band had 32 students named All-Region last month during competition, with 12 students advancing to Area level. The contests were held virtually this year because of COVID-19 precautions.
