Make it five.

That’s the number of times the Mike Moses Middle School MATHCOUNTS team has advanced to the state competition. It’s also how many years the team has existed at the school.

Mike Moses swept the top spots at the chapter competition held Feb. 2 at Angelina College in Lufkin. The team of Nio Ajero, Haris Hashim, Nicholas Bacarisse and Jordan Rankin came out on top, while Israel Leon and Adan Mandujano finished first and second, respectively, in the individual standings.

Club sponsor Andy Watts started the program five years ago. And, no, Watts is not a math teacher at Mike Moses; he’s in the social studies department.

“It’s the kids that do it,” Watts said.

On Thursday, after classes had ended for the day, Watts and his team were still in his classroom practicing for the state meet set for March 24 at the Hilton Austin Airport Hotel.

The questions come in rapid-fire succession, more like a game of high-speed TV Jeopardy, answers are expected to be just as quick. On Thursday, Watts projected the math problems on a screen at the front of the room and Mike Moses team members fired back responses.

MATHCOUNTS teams for middle school are made up of sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Nio, Haris and Israel are in eighth-grade, Nicholas and Jordan are in seventh, and Adan is a sixth-grader. Nio and Jordan are team co-captains.

MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide program that promotes math excellence for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-grade students and combines efforts of the education, business, government, and technology communities.
