NHS Delegates Capture Top Honors at Model UN

Three Model United Nations teams from Nacogdoches High School earned hardware Saturday during the competition held at Stephen F. Austin State University.

Model UN allows students to simulate roles as delegates to the United Nations from a particular nation and serve as representatives of that country's policies. The simulation educates students about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the agenda of the United Nations.

Participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations — such as the Security Council or the General Assembly.

Nacogdoches High School’s Netherlands team was named Best Overall Delegation and won first place in map/collage and third place in Resolution writing and Impromptu Resolution writing.

Head delegate was Josh Roy and delegates were Alex Presley, Rachel Wilder, Adrian Pitts and Israel Ocampo.

Pitts was named Best General Assembly Speaker, and Presley earned Honorable Mention on Security Council. Roy finished third in UNEP Committee, and Ocampo was third in UNHCR Committee.

The Peru team won first place in Digital Documentary and Resolution Writing.

Head delegate was Juan Rubio. Other delegates included, Alex Taaffe, Fariha Sultana, Kealy Hathaway, Jerry Moreno and Kamden Hathaway.

Rubio placed second in UNEP Committee, and Sultana was second in UNIDO Committee. Taaffe finished third in Security Council.

The Qatar team won first in Impromptu Resolution Writing and finished second in Map, Digital Documentary and Resolution Writing.

Head delegate was Stuart Beal. Other delegates included, Kristine Maulion, Kate Watson and Antonio Ajero. Beal won first place in UNEP Committee.
