Nacogdoches ISD welcomed first responders Friday, Aug. 10, for an appreciation breakfast at the NISD District Support Center.

“This is a chance to say ‘thank you’ and to look forward to a productive year of prevention,” NISD interim Superintendent Alton Frailey told those in attendance.

Law enforcement present included Nacogdoches County Sheriff’s Office, Nacogdoches Police Department and Stephen F. Austin State University Police, along with officers from Nacogdoches ISD Police. County, city and hospital emergency officials were also on hand for the breakfast.

NISD Police Chief Sandra Murray organized the appreciation event. Frailey pointed out the importance of the partnerships between school and law enforcement officials.

“I’ve never had a bad experience with law enforcement,” Frailey told those in attendance. “I appreciate you for the risks you take for our protection.”

NISD Board of Trustees President Pam Fitch expressed her gratitude.

“Thank you for what you do every single day,” Fitch said. “Being a first responder is not an easy task. You’re running towards trouble… not running away.”

Concerns regarding the threat of violence in schools were part of the discussion.

“It’s my observation these are folks who don’t feel connected to their schools,” Frailey said. “They’re seeking in their own minds some sort of retribution.

“And that’s why we as a school district have to connect. Every child is important here; every parent is important here.”

Frailey explained the vital role the district’s new Parent & Patron Assistance Center will fill in helping parents and students.

“If our parents and children feel listened to, it makes our work easier.”
