Activities set for graduation week

Seniors at Nacogdoches High School will have a busy final week.

Graduation for the Class of 2021 is set for 8 p.m., Friday, May 28, at Dragon Stadium. Gates will open at 7 p.m.

Each graduate will receive 10 guest tickets for the ceremony, which would allow for attendance at Dragon Stadium to be 50 percent of stadium capacity. Guest tickets will be distributed to graduates during the required graduation practice held the day of the ceremony. The ceremony will also be streamed live over the internet.

Everyone attending the ceremony is asked to wear a mask and there will be multiple kiosks of hand sanitizer available throughout the stadium. (The mask requirement is still in place based on directives received from Texas Education Agency.)

Once inside Dragon Stadium, guests will be asked to social distance between family groups. Color-coded tickets (gold or gray) will direct guests to the proper side of the stadium for seating.

Because graduation ceremonies are planned outdoors, two alternate dates are in place in the event of inclement weather: Saturday, May 29, and Saturday, June 5.

Before the Class of 2021 walks across the stage, a number of activities for NHS seniors will take place, beginning with the annual scholarship assembly at 9 a.m. Friday, May 21, in the Nacogdoches High School auditorium. (Due to social distancing requirements, the scholarship assembly is by invitation only.)

The NHS Senior Parade will take place at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 26, in downtown Nacogdoches. Seniors will begin arriving for staging at 5:45 p.m. behind Thomas J. Rusk Elementary in the parking lot. To participate in the parade, students must sign and return their Parade Release to Room 201 at NHS.

After completion of the parade, seniors will gather at Dragon Stadium for a Senior Sunset. Food trucks will be onsite, and seniors will view a slideshow on the Dragon Stadium video scoreboard.

Malcolm Rector Technical High School will hold its graduation in two parts on Thursday, May 27, in the Nacogdoches High School auditorium. Graduates with last names beginning with A through J will take part in a ceremony at 6 p.m.; graduates with last names beginning with K through Z will participate in a ceremony at 7 p.m.

Masks and social distancing will be required for everyone entering the NHS auditorium for the Malcolm Rector graduation. Students and parents are directed to park in the East lot off Appleby Sand Road.
