NHS named to SFA high school program

Nacogdoches High School was named Tuesday to Stephen F. Austin State University’s newly unveiled Distinguished High School Program, an opportunity that will both improve and simplify access for students seeking to continue their education at SFA following high school graduation. The program will also provide additional financial assistance for graduates in the top 25 percent of their graduating class.

SFA President Dr. Scott Gordon introduced the program during a ceremony held in the library at Nacogdoches High School. NISD Deputy Superintendent Michael Martin was on hand, and SFA’s Executive Director of Enrollment Management Erma Nieto Brecht provided additional details.

SFA’s Distinguished High School Program provides:

Application fee waiver for all students from a Distinguished High School.

Guaranteed admission to NHS seniors ranked in the top 30 percent of their class.

SFA scholarship of $5,000 per year (up to a total value of $20,000) for NHS students ranked in the top 10 percent of their class and an SFA scholarship of $3,000 per year (up to a total value of $12,000) for NHS students with at least a 3.0 high school GPA and ranked in the 11th to 25th percentile of their class.

Additional financial aid assistance to NHS students with high financial need.

A tailored campus visit for Distinguished High School students from NHS to experience a day at SFA

An assigned admissions counselor to serve NHS students during the college-enrollment process.

“We’re grateful for SFA’s willingness to include Nacogdoches ISD in its Distinguished High School Program, a move that will only improve upon a partnership that’s already proven fruitful to Nacogdoches,” Martin said during Tuesday’s ceremony. “This is an incredible opportunity for our students that will both increase access to and simplify the process of attending college.

“Not only will our students be able to take advantage of a streamlined application program, they will be eligible for automatic qualification for entrance at SFA and have an opportunity to obtain much-needed financial support.”

NHS students with questions about the program can receive additional information from the campus’ Go Center.

“I’m excited about SFA making this program available to our students,” NISD Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo said. “This will only strengthen the level of cooperation between SFA and NISD.”
