NISD’s Academy of Critical Thinkers

Nacogdoches ISD’s Academy of Critical Thinkers was at Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language on Saturday. The academy is part of the state-required bilingual summer program, which was disrupted last year by COVID-19. Texas Education Agency allowed public schools to extend the program into the Spring 2021 semester.

The Academy began in January and is held once a month on a Saturday and includes dual language students from all NISD campuses, including middle school and high school. The program is an attempt to improve students’ English language proficiency and academic skills in a culturally responsive atmosphere.

Students make cultural connections with thoughtful, hands-on activities. Students also take home three culturally relevant family projects to enhance learning.

NISD provides all supplies for the program, and the College of Education at Stephen F. Austin State University helps build the English enhancement curriculum.

The program also includes newcomer students from middle school and high school grades where the focus is to aid students’ English proficiency and adaptation to a new culture.
