Olivia Ajero wins Raguet Elementary Spelling Bee

Olivia Ajero and Mikaela Skipper dueled back and forth, requiring 40 rounds of competition before Olivia spelled “shepherd” to bring to a close the Raguet Elementary Spelling Bee on Friday, Dec. 13.

Olivia and Mikaela, both fifth-graders, spelled dozens of words, such as “sanitized,” “vinyl” and “agricultural.”

Twenty-six students competed in the Raguet spelling bee held in the school’s library. The students qualified for the competition by winning individual classroom spelling bees.

Olivia advances to the district spelling bee in February that will take place in Lufkin (Mikaela is the alternate). Qualifiers are part of the Scripps National Spelling Bee competition, and the Lufkin winner would advance to Houston for a chance to qualify for the national contest.

Raguet teachers Grace Beaty and Vonda Hoppe served as judges for the spelling bee, and Jedadiah Moss was the pronouncer.
