Dr. Joseph Rodriguez, Ed.D., has been named principal of Nacogdoches ISD’s alternative high school program currently known as Malcolm Rector Technical High School. For the past three years, Rodriguez has served as principal at NISD’s Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language.

“Dr. Rodriguez has been a wonderful leader at Nettie Marshall, and I know he will provide the same type of guidance for our credit recovery program,” said NISD Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo. “Credit recovery is one of the most important services we provide for students.

“Offering an avenue to catch up and earn a high school diploma is vital for students, who for a variety of reasons, may have fallen behind in their educational process.”

NISD’s District Alternative Education Program, along with the Nacogdoches County Alternative Education Cooperative, are also assigned to the campus located on North Street.

“It’s imperative we provide a way for students to catch up when the need arises,” said Rodriguez, who will assume control of the campus on July 1. “Any number of things can occur to throw students off a path to a high school diploma, but they deserve the same opportunities for success.”

Prior to coming to NISD in 2018, Rodriguez served as District Compliance Coordinator for English as a Second Language with Spring ISD near Houston. He previously served as Spring ISD’s ESL Coordinator for Secondary Schools and was an Assistant Principal/Special Programs Coordinator at Huntsville High School.

Rodriguez began his public education career in 1994 as a seventh- and eighth-grade science teacher at Albright Middle School in Alief. From 2001 to 2013, Rodriguez was a teacher and soccer coach at Conroe High School, where in his last year he served as an administrative intern before being named Assistant Principal in Huntsville.

Before entering college and becoming a teacher, Rodriguez was a Medical Specialist in the U.S. Army, reaching the rank of Sergeant.
