U.S. Navy’s Nimitz Exhibit will be at NHS

Nacogdoches High School has been chosen as the site for a visit from the Nimitz Exhibit, a state-of-the-art virtual reality experience from the U.S. Navy.

The exhibit will be on the NHS campus Tuesday, Nov. 16, between 7:20 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.

A number of simulated experiences will be available to visitors, including a pilot simulation in a high-speed assault craft. Another virtual reality mission will include an immersive, high-speed water extraction of a Navy SEAL team pinned down by enemy fire.

Participants go through a video briefing before strapping on a headset and a piece of wearable technology that percusses in real time to the sounds of the mission. Participants navigate the mission using “a cutting-edge steering wheel and throttle system that replicate the actual sensation of piloting a high-speed SWCC while extracting SEALs,” according to a press release from the U.S. Navy.

Once finished, participants move to the debriefing station, where they receive feedback and a performance grade.

U.S. Navy sailors will be on hand to guide visitors through physical training challenges and the opportunity to try out an interactive photo booth. Students will be introduced to Naval careers while they are exposed to this cutting-edge immersive experience.

All senior Government and Economic classes at NHS will be touring the exhibit during the day, as well as other seniors and juniors who make prior arrangements to attend.

The Navy will share information with students about its $180,000 ROTC Scholarship Program, which pays full college tuition for students with “exceptional academic and leadership credentials.”

The exhibit will be set up in the middle of the Stallings Loop front parking lot, just beyond the bus loop in front of NHS. A mask is required for anyone touring the facility.
