Young People’s Poet Laureate visits NHS

The U.S. Young People’s Poet Laureate handed out writing tips Wednesday to some Nacogdoches High School seniors.

Naomi Shihab Nye was at NHS as part of her visit this week to Stephen F. Austin State University.

While in town, she held an interactive professional development for teachers on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Nye participated in a four-hour workshop in the NHS library with creative writing students, then conducted a live reading with the students during the evening at the Judy B. McDonald Public Library.

Nye’s father was a Palestinian refugee and mother was an American of German and Swiss descent. Nye spent her adolescence in San Antonio and Jerusalem before earning a degree from Trinity University in San Antonio, where she still lives today. Her writing has been influenced by the two cultures she experienced while growing up in Texas and the Middle East.

Nye has been affiliated with the Michener Center for Writers at the University of Texas, and she has served more than 20 years as poetry editor for The Texas Observer. Nye is a professor of creative writing at Texas State University.
