Families from Fredonia Early Childhood Center gathered Tuesday, Feb. 13, for an unforgettable Family Engagement Camping Event during the evening. The school's cafeteria was transformed into a campground, complete with tents, fairy lights, and the comforting aroma of s'mores and hot chocolate. Tents of various sizes were pitched throughout the cafeteria, creating a unique atmosphere for parents and students.

The purpose of the event was to highlight reading and the scholastic book fair, which was set up in another room at the school. Volunteers from across the community came to read books or sing some campfire songs with the students. Nacogdoches-area author, Patricia Harris, came to read her book, Paddy the Platypus. Harris is a Nacogdoches resident who graduated from Texas Woman’s University with a degree in speech/drama and has written two plays that were produced at Lamp-Lite Theater.

Also in attendance was Mia Cresswell. She is an SFA student majoring in creative writing with a minor in literature, hoping to pursue a career in novel writing.  Mia is also a member of Fredonia Hill Baptist Church’s College Leadership where she works with the church’s special needs ministry as well as at a camp for children with special needs in the summer.

Emily Childress McCown, the program coordinator for the Nacogdoches Public Library, was also present. Fredonia Early Childhood Center teacher Wendy Pollette said Emily has been a true gift to the early childhood center, coming by once a month to read to students.
