Justin Phillips won the Academic UIL regional title in current events and placed third in social studies to earn a berth in the state meet that will take place May 13-15 at the University of Texas in Austin.
Joining Justin at the state competition will be Samantha McQuage, who earned a third-place finish in ready writing.
Three other NHS students earned medals at the regional competition held April 26-27 in Arlington. Anna Gutierrez placed sixth in Lincoln-Douglas debate; Mark Sifuentes was sixth in news writing; and Jean Choi placed fifth in persuasive speaking.
Four more students, including Samantha McQuage, qualified earlier this year for the CX debate state competition held in March. Joining Samantha at CX debate were JaBrandon Chatman, Jean Choi and Nora Herland.
