dragons spell magnets on refrigerator

Dragons can spell. And NISD Kindergarten and Pre-K students have brought home magnetic letters that can be arranged on a refrigerator door, something school children have been doing for decades.

Each early childhood student will receive a box of “My Magnetic Letters” along with a guide on different games they can be used with to spell out words.

Using magnetic letters is a hands-on, interactive approach that engages NISD’s youngest students in a multisensory learning experience, said Lauren Canty, the district’s K-2 Literacy Coordinator.

“It helps reinforce letter recognition, letter-sound associations and word building,” she said. “The tactile nature of arranging and rearranging magnetic letters can enhance memory and understanding, making it an effective tool for early literacy development.”

English as a Second Language students will receive both English and Spanish editions. Some of the boxes have already gone out and more will be given to students this week and next, Canty said.
