Biography
Working with English Learner students and their families has always been my career goal and passion. I believe Education opens the door for many opportunities. After completing my Bachelors’ degree, I obtained my master’s degree in School and Behavioral Psychology, and I have recently graduated with a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership. My love and passion for English Learners and their families started prior to my education. I am originally from Irapuato, Guanajuato Mexico. As an immigrant newcomer student in Nacogdoches High School, I experienced the frustration of not knowing how to speak the English language, but I also experienced the impact teachers can have in students’ academic success. I am also a mother of two bilingual students, and one of them is in the dual language program. I am a proud member of our beautiful Hispanic community. I have worked in education for more than seventeen years. During these years I had different roles including, teacher’s aide, substitute teacher, bilingual teacher, and License Specialist in School Psychology (LSSP). Currently, I have the pleasure of serving as the Director of Bilingual, English as a Second Language (ESL), and Migrant programs for the district. My goal is to improve our bilingual and ESL programs by engaging, empowering and educating English Learners and their families. My commitment is also for our amazing bilingual and ESL teachers and staff who work diligently to support our students and families daily. I am proud to be part of the Nacogdoches ISD Dragon family, and I am thankful to God for the opportunity to serve in this role.

Trabajar con estudiantes que hablan inglés como segundo idioma y sus familias siempre ha sido mi meta y pasión profesional. Creo que la educación abre la puerta a muchas oportunidades. Después de completar mi licenciatura para ser maestra, obtuve mi maestría en Psicología Escolar y del Comportamiento, y recientemente me gradué con un Doctorado en Liderazgo Educativo. Mi amor y pasión por los estudiantes de inglés y sus familias comenzaron antes de mi educación.
Soy originaria de Irapuato, Guanajuato México. Como estudiante inmigrante recién llegada a la escuela preparatoria de Nacogdoches, se dé la frustración de no saber hablar el idioma inglés, pero también experimenté el impacto que los maestros pueden tener en el éxito académico de los estudiantes. También soy madre de dos estudiantes bilingües, y uno de los cuales está en el programa de lenguaje dual. Estoy orgullosa de ser parte de nuestra hermosa comunidad hispana. He trabajado en educación durante más de diecisiete años. Durante estos años tuve diferentes roles, entre ellos, asistente de maestra, maestra suplente, maestra bilingüe y Licenciada en Psicología Escolar (LSSP). Actualmente, tengo el placer de servir como directora de programas bilingües, inglés como segundo idioma (ESL) y para inmigrantes del distrito de Nacogdoches.
Mi objetivo es mejorar nuestros programas bilingües y de ESL mediante la participación, el empoderamiento y la educación de los estudiantes de inglés y sus familias. Mi compromiso también es para nuestros increíbles maestros y personal bilingües y de ESL que trabajan diligentemente para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes y familias todos los días. Estoy orgulloso de ser parte de la familia Dragon de Nacogdoches ISD, y estoy agradecida con Dios por la oportunidad de servirles en esta profesión.
I have been with Nacogdoches ISD for 25 years. During my time here, I have been a teacher’s aide, a school registrar, and an attendance clerk. Currently, I serve as the Administrative Assistant for the Bilingual and ESL department at Nacogdoches ISD. While I have several responsibilities, one of my most important duties is to ensure that our Bilingual and ESL teachers and students have all the proper resources, training, and materials to help them succeed. My number one goal is to continue striving to be an asset to my department and school district. I genuinely enjoy what I do, and I hope to continue doing what I love for many more years. I am proud to be a Nacogdoches Dragon! Go Dragons! On a personal note, I am a wife and mother of 3 incredible young men. I love to plan and organize parties & events. I enjoy traveling, and I am a San Antonio Spurs basketball fanatic. Go Spurs!

He estado con Nacogdoches ISD durante 25 años. Durante mi tiempo aquí, he sido auxiliar de maestra, inscripciones y oficial de asistencia. Actualmente, me desempeño como Asistente Administrativa para el departamento de Bilingüe y ESL en Nacogdoches ISD. Si bien tengo varias responsabilidades, uno de mis deberes más importantes es asegurarme de que nuestros maestros y estudiantes bilingües y de ESL tengan todos los recursos, capacitación y materiales adecuados para ayudarlos a tener éxito. Mi objetivo número uno es continuar esforzándome por ser un activo para mi departamento y distrito escolar. Realmente disfruto lo que hago, y espero seguir haciendo lo que amo por muchos años más. ¡Estoy orgulloso de ser un Dragón Nacogdoches! ¡Vamos dragones! En una nota personal, soy esposa y madre de 3 jóvenes increíbles. Me encanta planificar y organizar fiestas y eventos. Biography
Carmen Cano was born in Mexico. She is a PK Teacher and Psychologist by profession. Emigrated to the United States in 1989 and lived in Brownsville, TX for 26 years. In 2015 she moved to Nacogdoches and since then she’s been working for Nacogdoches Independent School District. She currently serves as a Translator and Community Liaison for the Bilingual Department.
Carmen has been married to Guillermo Cano since 1989, and together have two children, Maria Graciela lives in Washington States and works for Amazon Web Services as a Data Linguist and Guillermo who just finished School of Medicine at Galveston UTMB.
For the past 28 years, Carmen and Guillermo have been actively involved in the mission field in Mexico and Latin America. Their work has focused on serving communities and spreading the gospel in these regions. Carmen enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with family and her cat.

En 2015 se mudó a Nacogdoches y desde entonces ha estado trabajando para el Distrito Escolar Independiente de Nacogdoches. Actualmente se desempeña como Traductora y Enlace Comunitario para el Departamento Bilingüe.
Carmen está casada con Guillermo Cano desde 1989, y juntos tienen dos hijos, María Graciela quien vive en el estado de Washington y trabaja para Amazon Web Services como lingüista de datos y Guillermo, quien recientemente termino la Facultad de Medicina en Galveston UTMB. Durante los últimos 28 años, Carmen y Guillermo han participado activamente en el campo misionero en México y América Latina. Su trabajo se ha centrado en servir a las comunidades y llevar el evangelio en estas regiones.
A Carmen le gusta viajar, leer y pasar tiempo con su familia y su gatita.

Biography
Linda Brock is an English Learners Specialist and LPAC Coordinator for Mike Moses Elementary and Carpenter Elementary in Nacogdoches ISD. She previously taught for twenty-eight years as a classroom teacher. She has taught at Lufkin ISD, Slocum ISD, and, most recently, at Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual language for ten years.
Linda graduated from the Defense Language Institute in Monterey California in 1988, where she was serving in the U.S. Army.
Linda graduated from Sam Houston State University (1993), where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education. She has had many years’ experience working with Emergent Bilingual students in the classroom.
Linda and her husband Russel have been married 44 years. They have a daughter, LeAnn, who resides in Dallas. In her free time, Mrs. Brock enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with her dogs Tucker and Gialo and her cat Kiki.

Biography
Patricia Ashworth is an English Learner Specialist for Nacogdoches School District. Patricia is married to her college sweetheart, Jeff, for 34 years. She has two grown boys. Patricia immigrated to the US when she was 6 years old. She is bilingual, biliterate, and bicultural in both English and Spanish.
Patricia comes with 20 plus years of experience in Bilingual / Dual Language Education in Public-Schools System. Patricia graduated from UC Davis with a bachelor’s in Communication and Organizational Sociology. She attended UC San Diego for her Bilingual Teaching Degree and got her Masters in Curriculum and Instruction with an ESL emphasis from Concordia University.
Patricia enjoyed many years as a classroom Dual Language teacher, she was a district teacher mentor, and she was instrumental in staring a Dual Language Program for Lake Oswego School District. During her move to Texas, Patricia took time to work with a variety of Migrant Ed programs in Oregon, Texas in Massachusetts. The Migrant Ed work varied from working as a family liaison, teaching elementary students online to teaching migrant young adults from Latin America to pass their GED or HISet test and obtain their HS Diploma. Patricia is also a Field Supervisor for current SFASU Clinical Teachers.

Tiene dos hijos adultos. Patricia emigró a los Estados Unidos cuando tenía 6 años. Es bilingüe y bicultural tanto en inglés como en español.
Patricia viene con más de 20 años de experiencia en Educación Bilingüe en el Sistema de Escuelas Públicas. Patricia se graduó de UC Davis con una licenciatura en Comunicación y Sociología Organizacional. Asistió a UC San Diego para obtener su título de Maestra Bilingüe y obtuvo su Maestría en Currículo e Instrucción con énfasis en ESL de la Universidad de Concordia.
Patricia disfrutó de muchos años como maestra de Lenguaje Dual en el salón de clases, fue mentora de maestros del distrito y fue fundamental para iniciar un Programa de Lenguaje Dual para el Distrito Escolar de Lake Oswego. Durante la transición de su cambio a Texas, Patricia se tomó el tiempo para trabajar con una variedad de programas de Educación para Migrantes en Oregon, Texas en Massachusetts. El trabajo de Educación Migrante varió desde trabajar como enlace familiar, enseñando a estudiantes de primaria en línea hasta enseñar a jóvenes adultos migrantes de América Latina a aprobar su examen GED o HISet y obtener su Diploma de HS. Patricia también es supervisora de campo para los actuales maestros clínicos de SFASU.

Biography
Charles Medley is an English Learners Specialist and LPAC Coordinator for Brooks-Quinn-Jones Elementary and Raguet Elementary in Nacogdoches ISD. 2023-2024 is his second year in the position after twelve years as a classroom teacher. He has previously taught at St. Patrick Catholic School in Lufkin, Nacogdoches DAEP, McMichael Middle School, and Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual language. Mr. Medley was named the NISD Elementary Teacher of the Year for 2021-2022.
Charles is a proud graduate of Nacogdoches High School (2002) and Texas A&M University (2006), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with a minor in English. After twelve years of classroom teaching experience, he is excited to work with Emergent Bilingual students, their teachers, and their families. Mr. Medley is especially excited to be doing this in his hometown and hopes to see each of these students grow to become well-informed, valuable contributing members of the Nacogdoches community.
Charles and his wife Chrystal have been married since 2010. They share two beautiful daughters, Savannah and Kendee. In his free time, Mr. Medley enjoys relaxing at home with his family, reading a good book, binge watching mystery shows, traveling to new places, and supporting mission efforts with his home church.

Maria Almendarez is an English Learner Specialist and Language Proficiency Assessment Coordinator for both McMichael and Mike Moses Middle schools in Nacogdoches ISD. Maria has been married for 29 years to Juan Almendarez and they have 4 children, all of which attended and graduated from Nacogdoches ISD schools.
Maria immigrated to the United States at the age of 7 and began her schooling as an English language learner at Nacogdoches ISD schools. She graduated from Nacogdoches High School in 1991 and subsequently attended Angelina College and Stephen F. Austin State University. Maria graduated in May 2004 from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelors in Interdisciplinary Studies. Before becoming an educator, she worked as a bilingual paraprofessional at Nettie Marshall Elementary in Nacogdoches ISD and at Slack Elementary in Lufkin ISD. She has 15 years of teaching experience all with Nacogdoches ISD. She was at the elementary level for 8 years and 7 years at the middle school level. Maria’s goal as an educator is to ensure that Nacogdoches ISD students are well prepared to function satisfactorily, both academically and socially in a linguistically and culturally diverse local and global communities.

Tiene 15 años de experiencia en la enseñanza, todos con Nacogdoches ISD. Estuvo en el nivel de primaria durante 8 años y 7 años en el nivel de secundaria. El objetivo de María como educadora es asegurar que los estudiantes de Nacogdoches ISD estén bien preparados para funcionar satisfactoriamente, tanto académica como socialmente, en comunidades locales y globales lingüística y culturalmente diversas.

Biography
Mario Torres is an English Learner Specialist and Language Proficiency Assessment Coordinator in Nacogdoches ISD. Mario has achieved success with well-established companies such as Dayton-Hudson Corporation, Starbucks, and as a Realtor® to name a few. After spending more than 18 years in Education, at the middle school level, Mario understands that using researched-based and brain-based learning strategies leads to increased student achievement. Mario holds a BA in psychology from The University of Texas at Austin. As a lifelong learner, Mario enjoys traveling, reading and volunteering within the community. His main goal as an educator, is to help increase the quality of life for all members of the community.

Mario Torres es un Especialista en Aprendices de Inglés y Coordinador de Evaluación de Dominio del Idioma en Nacogdoches ISD. Mario tiene una licenciatura en psicología de la Universidad de Texas en Austin. Como aprendiz de por vida, Mario disfruta viajar, leer y ser voluntario dentro de la comunidad. Su principal objetivo como educador es ayudar a mejorar la calidad de vida de todos los miembros de la comunidad.
Biography
Joella Villanueva grew up as a middle child in a family of eight. Her parents, Mexican immigrants were proponents of education. It was important to them to give their children the opportunity of going to school, because they did not have the opportunity.
She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor’s of Interdisciplinary Studies in Science, certified in early childhood through 4th grade. After teaching one school year, she became bilingual certified.
She has taught for 15 years, all at Nacogdoches ISD. Her experience includes teaching 2nd grade, kindergarten, and prekindergarten students. She also was a bilingual/ESL interventionist.
As the EB specialist for the high school, this year, her goals are to help teachers learn strategies to grow EB students in learning academic language, content and making connections with the students. She is also the LPAC coordinator.

Joella Villanueva creció como una niña de en medio en una familia de ocho. Sus padres, inmigrantes mexicanos, eran defensores de la educación. Era importante para ellos dar a sus hijos la oportunidad de ir a la escuela, porque ellos no la tuvieron.
Se graduó de la Universidad Estatal Stephen F. Austin con una Licenciatura en Estudios Interdisciplinarios en Ciencias, con certificación desde infantes hasta el 4º grado.
Después de enseñar un año escolar, se certificó como maestra bilingüe. Ha enseñado durante 15 años, todos en Nacogdoches ISD. Su experiencia incluye la enseñanza de estudiantes de 2º grado, jardín de niños y prekindergarten. También ha sido una intervencionista bilingüe / ESL.
Como especialista en EB para la escuela secundaria, este año, sus objetivos son ayudar a los maestros a aprender estrategias para hacer crecer a los estudiantes de EB en el aprendizaje del lenguaje académico, el contenido y la creación de conexiones con los estudiantes. También es la coordinadora de LPAC.

Biography
Donna Rodrigues is an English Learner Specialist and LPAC Coordinator for Nacogdoches Independent School District and is currently serving both NHS and MCAS. She graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1990 and a Master of Education degree in 1993. Donna worked at Nettie Marshall Academy of Dual Language from 2014 to 2022 as an elementary teacher. Before coming to Nacogdoches ISD in 2014, she taught at Chireno ISD, St. Patrick’s Catholic School, and Lufkin ISD.
Kenneth and Donna Rodrigues have been married since 1994. They share two children and two grandchildren. She enjoys spending time outdoors, reading, and relaxing at home with her family during her free time.
