Nacogdoches High School's Students of International Origin Club visited Fredonia Early Childhood Center April 5 to read with NISD's Pre-K students.

"It is exciting to witness our high school students mentoring preschool students and interacting with them by reading aloud to, listening to, and conversing with each other." Club Sponsor Dr. Katherine Whitbeck said. "After returning to NHS, the students write reflective essays to complete their immersion in the English Language Arts."

This is the third year since the club's founding that students have made an effort invest in the NISD community.

Sponsored by Whitbeck and Veronica York and assisted by District Support Center Emergent Bilingual Specialists Joella Villanueva and Donna Rodrigues, this year's students have participated in Dieciseis de Septiembre,  Hispanic Heritage Month, Japanese Student Exchange Visit to NHS, Dia de Los Muertos, Lamp-Lite Players’ performance of The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, and Cinco de Mayo activities at NHS, McMichael, and in downtown Nacogdoches.

They also assisted the NISD Bilingual/ESL Department last fall when it hosted the Mexican Consulate at the Nacogdoches County Civic Center.

Through these opportunities, several SOI members have achieved the status of Nacogdoches Chamber of Commerce NOBLE Scholars, including Kim Nguyen, Tuan Nguyen, Betsy Alvarado, Angel Cruz, Oscar Hernandez-Hernandez, Julianna Ramos Pojoy, Emely Rodriguez and Itzel Vega.
