Jay Brown named interim athletic director

Jay Brown has been appointed interim athletic director by Nacogdoches ISD while the district begins the process of hiring a new head football coach and AD.

Brown has more than 30 years of experience in coaching and has been at Nacogdoches High School since 2019. His career includes stops at Henderson, Palestine, Tyler High (formerly John Tyler) and Denton Ryan. He also has college coaching experience at Stephen F. Austin State University, New Mexico State and Mississippi Valley State.

Brown’s appointment comes after the resignation earlier this week of Darby House as athletic director and head football coach. House has accepted a similar position at Smithville High School near Bastrop.

The opening for the head coach and athletic director position has been posted on the district’s employment website. NISD is currently accepting applications.

“There is so much promise in our football program in the coming seasons,” said NISD Superintendent Grey Burton. “And there’s a lot of promise across the board in all of our athletic programs. We need a leader who will turn that potential into championships. We are committed to finding that leader and giving them the necessary support to make Dragon Athletics Legendary.

“I’m excited about the possibilities and truly expect to receive a lot of interest in this opening over the coming weeks .”

The Dragons football team finished 6-5 last fall, its first winning season since 2014 and earned its first playoff berth since 2021.
