NISD planning repairs for facilities affected by flooding

Extreme weather events this year, including flooding rains and strong thunderstorms, has caused a number of problems for Nacogdoches ISD facilities, resulting in cancellations or changes to scheduled events, including the Dragons spring intrasquad football game, which will now take place at Stephen F. Austin State University’s Homer Bryce Stadium.

NISD administration is calling for a special meeting of the school board this week to consider timely expenditures for the repairs.

“In times such as this, just like everyone else, we’re at the mercy of contractor schedules,” said Superintendent Dr. Gabriel Trujillo. “So, we’re grateful that our contractors have been able to fit in these emergency repairs.”

Damage to the band hall at Nacogdoches High School occurred just before Christmas when a cold snap burst pipes, flooding the facility. Contractors are tackling the repairs – which affects the auditorium since the HVAC systems are shared – because they had to wait for the end of the school year.

Flooding earlier this month also caused damage to the District Support Center and the playing surface at Dragon Stadium, where the eight-year-old artificial turf will need to be replaced. Light standards at the stadium turned by strong winds from a severe thunderstorm are also being moved back into place. Damage from a leak is also being repaired at Thomas J. Rusk Elementary School.
