Grey Burton named lone finalist for superintendent post

Grey Burton was named the lone finalist for the position of superintendent of schools by Nacogdoches ISD Board of Trustees. The unanimous vote took place during a special meeting held Monday at the boardroom in the E.J. Campbell Annex.

Texas law requires the NISD board wait at least 21 days before formally approving a contract with Burton.

“We look forward to Mr. Burton coming on board as superintendent,” said Farshid Niroumand, president of the Board of Trustees. “He will be a great fit here. His district, Rusk ISD, is similar demographically to ours, and he’s already familiar with the Nacogdoches community.

“When I was athletic director, I reported directly to Mr. Burton and I saw firsthand that he’s professional, likes things done the correct way and plays the game by the rules.”

Burton will be returning to NISD nearly seven years after leaving to fill the superintendent post at Rusk ISD in neighboring Cherokee County. Before taking over in Rusk, Burton served five years as Associate Superintendent of Administrative Services and Operations at NISD. Prior to that, Burton was superintendent at Martinsville ISD from 2007 to 2013 and was also superintendent/principal at Pineywoods Community Academy, a charter school in Lufkin.

Burton’s family has close ties with the district; two of his children are graduates of Nacogdoches High School.

Burton has a Master of Educational Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University. He obtained his Bachelor of Science in education from SFA in 1995.

Burton will be replacing Dr. Gabriel Trujillo who left the district in March after five years with NISD. Trujillo returned to Grand Prairie ISD where he was named superintendent.

NISD trustees contracted with Arrow Educational Services Inc. to conduct the search for superintendent, the same firm the district used in 2020 when Trujillo was hired. The board conducted interviews with candidates the weeks of May 5 and May 12.
