School board recognition month is January 2026 with photos of NISD board members

School Board Recognition Month is in January, and Nacogdoches ISD is celebrating the district’s trustees and their commitment and dedication to our students and staff.

The theme of this year’s School Board Recognition Month is “Our Future is Public,” part of a year-round campaign from Texas Association of School Boards highlighting and elevating success stories from districts across the state.

The Texas public education system is the second largest in the country, with 5.5 million students and more than 1,200 school districts, representing some 8,600 campuses and 375,000 teachers.

Public schools like Nacogdoches ISD are educating the future of Texas, equipping a workforce that will prove critical to the success of the state’s economy, which currently ranks eighth globally, surpassing the economies of several countries, including Canada, Russia, and Italy. In the coming years, skilled K-12 graduates will be asked to take on important and essential opportunities in the workplace, the military, or in higher education.

NISD’s Board of Trustees include: President Farshid Niroumand, Vice President the Rev. James Ervin, Secretary Leabeth Abt, T.C. Grohman M.D., Mindy Winslow and Cheryl Brady.

In Texas, school boards are designed to serve as the link between the community and classroom, and trustees are elected to establish policies that provide a durable framework for public schools to operate within.

“Our board members are indispensable to the success we have in the district,” said Superintendent Grey Burton. “It’s their dedication, vision and commitment that shape the future of our schools and students.

“They serve as a crucial link to our community, providing a durable foundation for the district and ensuring that NISD’s vision is carried out properly.”
