Students and teacher in construction and carpentry class

Nacogdoches High School students in the career and technical education department are again helping out Village Nac, a faith-based community providing assistance for those suffering from chronic mental health issues or chronic homelessness.

This time, the students are building temporary outhouses that will be used by Village Nac while the organization expands its permanent facilities, NISD Director of CTE Shawn Lucena said.

The outhouses being constructed will be fitted with an incinerator toilet by Village Nac. The buildings do not require plumbing but will need electricity.

The work at NHS is taking place in construction and carpentry courses taught by James Mason and Michael Bentley.

It’s not the first time Nacogdoches High School construction students have provided infrastructure for Village Nac. A year ago, the CTE program donated a tiny home for use at the facility after designing and constructing the house as part of a competition.

“These types of projects provide great opportunities and experience for our students,” said Lucena. “This is real world application, and we’re grateful to help out.”
