Nacogdoches High School students and firefighters

Career and Technical Education students from Nacogdoches High School will design and construct dining and meeting tables that will be used in a new central fire station that was part of a bond approved in 2023 by city voters.

This week, students from Laura Hairston’s Practicum of Entrepreneurship class have been making presentations to firefighters for the planned tables.

Once designs are settled, construction/carpentry and welding students will begin designing and building the tables. The meetings are an opportunity for firefighters to view the proposals then provide input as the design process moves forward on the two-year project. The first table should be revealed at the end of 2027, said Shawn Lucena, NISD’s Director of Career and Technical Education.

On Wednesday, Katelyn Frost, Kinsley Fields, Josue Morones and Miranda Pena met up with Nacogdoches firefighters at Station No. 4 that is located adjacent to the high school.

Photographs of designs and options along with customizable elements were presented, and students and firefighters had a chance to visit in small groups to expand on the ideas.

NFD will provide the wood slabs that will serve as table tops. Other materials required will be provided by the Nacogdoches Fire Museum.
