Nacogdoches High School One-Act Play is taking its production of “Picnic on the Battlefield” on the road to the district competition March 17 in Hallsville.
And Nacogdoches fans can see performances at the NHS auditorium on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, March 19-21. Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and the show starts at 7. Tickets are $5.
Because it is one-act play, the show’s length is less than 40 minutes. On Thursday night, following the NHS performance, Martinsville High School will put on its own production of “The Bald Soprano.”
The Dragons advanced out of the zone competition held last week during spring break with junior Peyton Lewis earning “Best Performer.” Other honors included “Technical Award” for junior Salma Diaz and “Honorable Mention All-Star Cast” for seniors Katelyn Rocha and Domynik Willis.
The topic of “Picnic on the Battlefield” (by Spanish playwright Fernando Arrabal) features nameless adversaries on a nameless battlefield where war is cast as the ultimate absurdity. NHS last performed “Picnic on the Battlefield” four years ago, in 2022.
The cast and crew include only three returning veterans of NHS productions, director and theatre teacher Victoria Perry said. Katelyn Rocha, Hadley Harris and Peyton Lewis are all back from earlier productions.
Benjamin Kraig is a freshman in the Theatre 1 class, Salma Diaz has taken Theatre 1 and senior Domynik Willis has had a small part in a local Lamplite production, Perry said. “But other than that, everyone is brand new to both Theatre and One-Act Play.”
