Nacogdoches High School’s Emmily Castillo and Kelsie Sanchez won state championships in fiber analysis at the Texas Public Safety Association state contest held earlier this month.
Teammates Addyson Gatwood and Joselyn Gonzalez finished second in the same division, while Joselyn and Alma Marines finished second in the first responders competition.
In the Fiber Analysis event, competitors examine a fiber sample to determine if it’s natural or synthetic, based on microscopic and chemical analysis. Students are required to justify their choice, in a written conclusion, based on the identified characteristics.
The First Responder event places students in a simulated emergency scene where they are required to assess the situation, administer first aid, and demonstrate CPR/AED skills in a scenario designed to test their medical response skills.
Also placing in first responders were Ariana Garcia and Shelby Mejia in fourth, and Yadira Santoyo and Emily Santoyo in fifth.
NHS sent 21 students to the state competition.
