High jumper clears bar

Nacogdoches High School track and field records fell by the wayside Friday at the District 9/10-5A Area Meeting in Mount Pleasant.

Three Dragons won area titles: Micah Lockett, Jonas Hollins and Mia Weems. Boys hurdler Braylon Horton broke his own school record in the 110-meter race, Avery Hardcastle bested her own mark in the girls 800 run and Cailyn Williams set a new school mark in the girls 100 hurdles.

Lockett is heading back to the regional track and field meet. The Nacogdoches High School senior topped 7-feet in the high jump in his quest to return to Austin and a chance to win a second consecutive state title. Hollins collected a title in the 400 dash with a time of 48.41 seconds, and Weems won by clearing 11-3 in the girls pole vault.

Horton qualified for regionals in the 110- (13.9) and 300-meter hurdles (38.6), finishing second in both events.

Hardcastle's record-breaking time of (2:16.77) in the 800 was good enough for a second place finish and a spot at regionals. Williams finished fourth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 15.17.

The top four finishers at area meets qualify for regionals.

The boys 4x100 relay finished fifth and just missed out on qualifying for regionals. Kaden Brooks also finished fifth in high jump at 6-2. Lady Dragon JaRiyah King was fifth in triple jump with an effort of 36 1/2. Mia Perez finished fifth in the 3200 run with a time of 12:02.58.

The Class 5A Region II Track and Field Meet will be held May 1-2 at Maverick Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas in Arlington.
