Nacogdoches ISD’s Accelerated Learning Academy will launch this semester to provide students with instruction to meet requirements from Texas House Bill 4545 for accelerated instruction for any student who did not pass the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness, or STAAR exam, in grades 3-8 or End of Course Assessments in high school.
The instruction will address unfinished learning related to the COVID-19 pandemic and utilizes state and federal funds to provide targeted support for districts to accelerate student learning.
The district will be recruiting and hiring part-time tutors that will receive an hourly rate from the Texas COVID Learning Acceleration Support Grant, an award of $400,000 the district received that will be used over a three-year period to provide academic support for all campuses.
NISD is launching a recruitment outreach program this week, seeking tutors to work in the program. Pay for the part-time positions will be competitive, Chief Academic Officer Dr. Daya Hill said. Most positions, which come with a flexible work schedule, will earn an hourly rate of $40.
“These are vitally important roles we’re creating,” Hill said. “There are students identified who will greatly benefit from this additional help.”
The district hopes to attract retired teachers to fill many of the openings, Hill said. “The fact we’ve made this an attractive pay rate for part-time positions is indicative of the emphasis we’re placing on this program.”
A tutoring interest SURVEY that goes live on Oct. 25 for NISD will remain open through Nov. 5. The district hopes the SURVEY will build a pool of qualified tutors.
