Author John Schu presents a book to an NISD teacher

Nacogdoches ISD hosted children’s author John Schu Tuesday. Schu’s presentation to the district's fourth-graders took place at the NHS auditorium.

As part of the visit, every fourth-grader received a signed copy of "The One and Only Ivan,” a novel by Katherine Applegate. Schu described to fourth-graders his special connection with the actual Ivan, a real gorilla who was the inspiration for Applegate’s novel.

Throughout Tuesday’s presentation, Schu provided students a "tour" of his favorite books and the connections he has made through these books. After introducing each title, Schu gave away a copy to an NISD student and then provided the student a personalized signature following the presentation.

Schu is the creator of the popular blog “Mr. Schu Reads” ( He was also the Ambassador of School Libraries for Scholastic Book Fairs, a part-time lecturer at Rutgers University, and a former classroom teacher and school librarian.

Schu has visited with school children all over the world, meeting with over 130,000 students, teachers and administrators as he advocates for the people and things he cares about most: kids, books, schools, and the libraries – and librarians – that connect them. “This Is a School” is his picture book debut.
