NISD preps for STAAR 2.0 rollout next spring

In the 2023 Spring semester, state testing in Texas will change and the original State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) will fully transition to the newly designed STAAR 2.0. This means all students will be assessed exclusively online, and students will see several different types of questions rather than the traditional multiple choice.

Examples of these new question types might include but are not limited to short answer, multiple response (where two or more answers are required) and drag-and-drop (where students will match answers to together). Approximately 75% of STAAR 2.0 will consist of these new question types while the remaining 25% will still be multiple choice.

In addition, time limits on testing have been removed from STAAR 2.0. Although the majority of students should be able to finish the test within three hours, students will be allowed to test until the end of the school day, if needed.

Nacogdoches ISD has prepared in advance for these changes and will continue to stay current with the new protocol being rolled out for state testing. Last summer, NISD began reviewing these changes to the testing program and designed a plan to prepare teachers, campus administrators and students for the new testing method. Teachers and campus administrators have received training on how best to prepare for the upcoming STAAR 2.0 assessments.

Also, students will continue to familiarize themselves with new testing design by taking locally developed exams that are created using a variety of the question types, along with state-provided practice tests that are accessible online.

Because of the transition to online testing, all students can access keyboarding practice through the learning.com instructional resource (Classlink Access) on their chrome books.

What Parents Should Know About Online Testing
